NZ’s Best Commercial Photographer, John Crawford

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

J.C . was over from New Zealand recently, and we caught up on a couple of occasions. We went to an Italian joint in Carlton for dinner, John turning up to meet me toting his 5D2 with a 35mm 1.4L – no camera bag or nothing, though. We spent the evening drinking Peroni and taking pics with the camera, and John taking extra ones with his IPhone. A great photographer like John can turn out some stunning pics even on one of those!

We wound our way to Fitzroy, shooting in next to no light, and marveling at what you can do with these new generation DSLRs. Here is one such pic I took of John, 5D2 35mm f2:

Motion and Sound – 5DMK2

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

I just bought the Rode Videomic for my Canon 5D2. This mic was recommended on several forums, and by Vincent Laforet, the esteemed director of Reverie.

I have doing extensive testing, as I am now offering motion as part of my service. It’s actually ironic in some respects, as when I started out in photography in the late eighties I was initially wanting to go into cinematography, and was encouraged into stills by a then DOP. I am excited about the motion stuff and the convergence of stills and motion under the one roof of DSLRs. I have done plenty of audio engineering, and know my way round sound recording, too. Combining sound and motion – excellent!

I will be calling on Colby Canon Welsh for his expertise in editing, which he is doing with Final Cut. Colby and I will be sharing shooting duties.

Look forward to posting some clips soon.
