Hope St Studios, Brunswick Artist Project

Monday, May 31st, 2010

One of the longest established artist studios in Brunswick, Hope St Studios was set up by Bob Knob who still runs the place. I reckon this pic of the piano with its sign, the scratches on the floor, and the rabid painting captures the aesthetic of the studio rather nicely.

Here is Andrew Hustwaite, sculptor, who works in the studio. He is part of the upcoming exhibition, the Brunswick Show, in July, featuring 20 artists from the hood.

Playspace, Artist Space, Brunswick

Monday, May 31st, 2010

In my continuing series on artist spaces in Brunswick, here is a panorama of Playspace, in Albert St. As is evident, it is massive, and it has even hosted a roller disco night.

This is the entry to the toilets, and I have titled this shot Aliens and Humans.

Genevieve McLean, Melbourne Artist

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

We have shot Genevieve’s sculptures several times, and here is a work of hers ‘Water Bird’ from a shoot yesterday. Her work is very textural, so appropriate lighting needs to be used. You have to strike a balance between bringing out textures, and not overemphasising them.

This bird was lit with a really large softbox from the left, feathering it (no pun intended!), a reflector board, and a gridded light on the background.

Glass Photography

Friday, May 21st, 2010

I have been doing some glassware shots. Glass is challenging to shoot, and I have been taking instruction from the fantastic book, Light Science & Magic. This is the best book on lighting I have ever come across – I wish I had had it as a student at photography school in the 90′s.

Drinking goblets are Kosta Boda.

Poppy Machine

We went to Wye River for the weekend, a small inlet on the Great Ocean Rd. I happened upon the games room, and this slightly surreal scene.
